SADiLaR Vacancies



Purpose of the position:

The Research Manager is a high-level position within SADiLaR, a national research infrastructure hosted by the NWU and funded by the Department of Science and Technology. The position will provide academic leadership as the first professor in Digital Humanities in South Africa while fostering excellence in research and teaching. The position will initiate and coordinate dedicated projects executed by the centre itself, as well as by SADiLaR’s nodes comprising the University of Pretoria, UNISA, the Meraka Institute of the CSIR, CTexT as well as ICELDA which is a partnership of four SA universities.


  • Academic leadership in research and teaching
  • National and international liaison in support of the development

Minimum requirements:

  • A doctorate in languages or literature (modern, classic or ancient) on a topic relating to Digital Humanities, or a doctorate in any discipline in the humanities and social sciences with a focus on digital scholarship.

Other competency requirements:

  • Experience in teaching modern languages or any discipline within the humanities implementing digital methods
  • A substantial number of applicable academic publications/ outputs
  • Experience in supervising postgraduate studies
  • An academic network within own field of specialisation
  • Advanced knowledge of own discipline
  • Experience in participation in national and international conferences and workshops
  • A record of successful project proposals
  • The ability to effectively liaise and communicate with the public, students and colleagues at various levels and from diverse backgrounds
  • The ability to promote innovative research methods in the academic domain
  • The ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • An NRF rating or demonstrably near to submission for a rating (as a recommendation)
  • Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various multilingual environments of the NWU
